"My name is Mathew S. I am 10 years old and go to the Hess School Complex in Mays Landing. The Hess Information Media Center (IMC) taught me how important and fun reading can be. One of my favorite books is My Weird Science Series by Dan Gutman."
Mathew S., Laureldale, NJ
"I remember spending Saturday mornings as a child in the 1950's sitting on the floor of the tiny Brigantine Public Library, sorting through Nancy Drews and Cherry Ames. The challenge was to pace myself so I didn't run out of books before the next weekend! Today I am a school librarian and get a thrill every time a student says, "I love the library."

"I first started using the library when I was in the third grade at McKee City School in Egg Harbor Township. The bookmobile came to the school about once a week and my favorite books to read were The Twins Books by Lucy Fitch Perkins. Each book told a story about life in another country, or a time in American history. My favorite was The Revolutionary War Twins. All through school history was my favorite subject and I still enjoy researching family history."
Nancy H., Egg Harbor City
"When I was about 10, Joanie Klocke and I would play library and lend our books to the neighborhood kids -- they even had date due cards. So I guess I was destined to be a librarian from way back. I also worked in my high school and college libraries - so it was natural that I chose this as my career."
Wina W., Hamilton Township
"I have always loved reading. I grew up in South Philadelphia, and the library was about two or three blocks from my school, at 22nd and Shunk. I frequently went there, before going home.
"After all these
years, one book stands out -- The Sapphire Signet by Augusta Huiell Seaman. I think I should look it up and read it again to see why, after nearly 80 years, I still remember the author's name and the title (the plot is foggy). Still reading!"
Mary W., Mullica Township
"I remember the Greenwich Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia as the first library that I used and learned about getting books for free. I was introduced to the Doctor Dolittle series, before Eddie Murphy and Freddy the Pig. This expanded my horizons beyond comic books, Tom Swift and The Hardy Boys. Little did I know that the experiences I had in that small branch would eventually lead to an over 35 year career in libraries.
"As an employee of the Atlantic County Library System I have been able to help others have the same enriching experience."
Bill P., Brigantine
"The library is a very important place to our family. We get books, movies and help for homework here. We even had our passports renewed here. We can't imagine life without our library and the helpful librarians that work here."
Judy A., Egg Harbor Township
"I always told my kids as they grew up that the library can be their "best friend" to help get them through their academic challenges. They are now in college. I love that we have such a good library right here in town."
Mary Beth F., Mays Landing (Online Response)
"What do libraries mean to me?
As a child I heard a story that George Washington slept upstairs in the town’s library. The wooden floor by the circulation desk was so creaky I knew the building had to be old; and since the building was originally a tavern dating from the 1700s and on the road to Jockey Hollow, I knew this story about our first President was real. This led me to believe the library was a very special and important place, a concept I still hold.
"How important are libraries to my family? Besides saving an incalculable amount of money for a family who constantly reads, five members of my family from three generations have worked in thirteen libraries. And to top it off, I met my husband when we both worked at our college library. Yes, libraries and all that they mean to our society are an integral part of my life."
Karen G., Galloway Township
"The library helps with my homework and also helps me pass time by reading books."
Thomas K., Browns Mills (Online Response)
"I need the library. The library is very important for me to get information in all areas of my life. Medical, automotive, politics, world current information, many areas. My children need to use the library because it teaches them about computers."
Michael C., Pleasantville
"I frequently check out, reserve or return books at Egg Harbor City. I also use Mays Landing and Galloway branches, but EHC is closest to my home."
Rico, Galloway Township
"I don't know what I would do without the library. The employees are very helpful and polite in Egg Harbor City and Mays Landing. They try to help whenever they can. We need libraries for learning and seeking jobs."
Helen R., Mays Landing
"I like to chat with the librarians."
Anonymous, Egg Harbor City
"The library is the heart of our community. We have lived all over the country and have never encountered people so helpful, informative, and just plain terrific as the staff in this library. We would be lost without them."
Theresa F., Brigantine
"I love my library - the ladies are so courteous, knowledgeable, and can find what publication I'm looking for with ease. Thank you, please support our library!"
