Meet Nancy Hackney

| Nancy Hackney, the office services manager in our Mays Landing branch, is an accomplished crafter. |

What is your job at the library?
My position as an office services manager involves a variety of duties. I order supplies for all the branches (especially for the printers) and keep track of employees' time. |

What kinds of crafts do you work with?
I like to make things out of wood. I like the feel and smell of wood, and using different tools.
I also do counted cross stitch, mostly of lighthouses.

What got you interested in woodworking?
I don’t know what got me interested in woodworking really, but I started making things about 30 years ago. I like to recycle scrap pieces of wood when I can. I mainly use a jig saw and drill press and sometimes a router (not the kind the libraries use!).

Do you have other hobbies?
I’ve been very successful with genealogy. I’ve traced my family to County Wicklow and County Tyrone in Ireland to about 1760. I’ve also helped other people find ancestors. I have friends in Ireland and Australia that I made through genealogy and keep in touch with.
I had one ancestor who was in the Civil War and died in 1895. After some research, I found his grave in a veterans' cemetery in Hampton, VA. He had the wrong first name on his headstone. I spoke to someone from the Army in charge at the cemetery and they issued a new headstone. I thought that was neat after all those years. |

How long have you worked at the library and what part of the job do you enjoy most?
In June it will be 31 years working at the library and I enjoy working here. It’s hard to say what I like the most - I like everything about working for the library: the people, my hours, which can be flexible when needed. It's a great place to work! |
Have you read any good books recently that you’d like to share with us?
I’ve recently read Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley. I’m on the second book of Blue Bells Chronicles, The Minstrel Boy, a trilogy by Laura Vosika. The first book was Blue Bells of Scotland.
