Resources to Deal with Stress and Natural Disasters
COPING COLLECTION MAY HELP WITH HURRICANE SANDY DISCUSSIONS

The Atlantic County Library System has a special collection of books in our Outreach Services Section which deals with natural disasters. We hope, as you and your family cope with Hurricane Sandy’s aftermath, that these books will be helpful in answering your children’s questions and calming their fears.

  • *The Flute- Rachna Gilmore 2012
    This picture book written by Governor General's Award-winning author Rachna Gilmore and illustrated by India's most renowned illustrator, Pulak Biswas, a little girl nearly drowns when a swollen river overflows its banks. Tragically, her beloved mother and father are swept away in the flood. Raised by a cruel and uncaring aunt and uncle, the little girl finds solace in her mother's magic flute.

  • *A Storm Called Katrina - Myron Uhlberg 2011
    When flood waters from broken levees submerge their New Orleans neighborhood in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, a young cornet player and his parents evacuate their home and struggle to survive and stay together.

  • *Hooper Finds A Family: a Hurricane Katrina Dog’s Survival Tale- Jane Paley 2011.
    Hooper tells his own dramatic rescue tale after being left homeless in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and taking a daring trip from New Orleans to New York to meet his new family. He tells of the terrifying force of Katrina, his trials in the shelter, and being the new dog on the block in a city far from home. As Hooper struggles to find his place, he learns to overcome his fear of water and faces down feisty squirrels as well as the resident bully and top dog in his new neighborhood.

  • *Selvakamur Knew Better- Virginia Kroll 2009
    Tsunami! Run! The bright December day dawns like any other, and the Ramakrishnan family goes about their daily business as usual.   • *Gunner: Hurricane Horse- Judy Andrekson 2010
    PBJ Decks Smokin Gun (Gunner) is an American Paint Horse, one of the many of Heather Lott Goodwin's herd, and a valuable show animal that won the World Championship Paint Horse title. When Hurricane Katrina passed over the Goodwin property, it took with it the fences, the cattle, and several horses. Heather and her family lived in their horse trailer for six weeks and considered themselves lucky to have safe, comfortable shelter. After the storm, they searched for the animals and recovered many of them. But three months passed before they located Gunner, a hundred miles away.

  • *A Place Where Hurricanes Happen- Renee Watson 2010
